Finding Your Vocation in a World of Millennial's
Those darn millennial's creeping back into your feed, causing you grief. You wonder, what the heck even counts as a Millennial anyway? I used to think that it was kids born in the 2000's... then I came to find out that I am a millennial. This is a group I don't really like to group myself with seeing as I am not your "stereotypical" millennial, even though I enjoy the ease and the access that they have always had.
A millennial is defined as: a person reaching young adulthood in the early 21st century (dictionary.com). Recently they found that anyone born before 1987 is not a millennial... I am lost in translation.
Millennials have been dubbed as - addicted to technology, feeling success is given and not earned, everyone gets a trophy... the usual things. I view myself on the edge, I like technology, I believe rewards should be earned and not given, success must be earned, and I love physical books and planners.
But here is the big news - Millennials are coming to take over the world.
I heard once in an innovcation given at my work that Millennials don't stay in jobs very long as where baby boomers stayed for long ammounts of time. Millennials have some obscure degrees in social media, bagpiping, bowling, and heck even The Beatles! As where our fathers and mothers before us had English, Science, Math, and more. Granted this is great! More options for more success rates ... right?
So now where does this leave you? Well my view on life is if you don't love it, don't do it.
Many a time I have been in a rut, hating what I did. It was not until I changed it that I discovered what I truly wanted to do. In my Master Degree studies for Leadership, we got to talk about invocation (see previous post) . This is something that is important for us to use in our lives. Vocation is finding your calling in life. You hear about a lot of service people (from cops to nurses) that say it is their life work to do what they are doing. It is such a great component.
I am not saying all millennial's are passionless, in fact, it is just the opposite, they are very passionate... it is just that they want the next big thing. If your calling is working fast food, do it. If your calling is being at the top, do it! If you feel being a permanent student is your calling DO IT!
